When The Beatles first stepped onto the Cavern Club stage, few could have predicted that the low-ceilinged cellar on Mathew Street would become the crucible in which the world’s most influential band was forged.

Yet for The Beatles, The Cavern Club was not simply another venue. It became home.

The Line-Up That Started It All

The Beatles’ first performance at The Cavern Club featured the early line-up that laid the foundations of their sound:

  • John Lennon – vocals, rhythm guitar

  • Paul McCartney – vocals, rhythm guitar

  • George Harrison – lead guitar, vocals

  • Stuart Sutcliffe – bass

  • Pete Best – drums

This was a band still evolving, still learning, and still shaping what would soon become a new language of popular music.

Forged Underground on Mathew Street

The Cavern Club quickly became The Beatles’ signature venue. What began as a single appearance turned into a residency that defined both the band and the club itself.

Those legendary lunchtime gigs were unlike anything else. The audience stood just inches from the stage. There was no barrier, no distance, no polish. The exchange between band and crowd was immediate and electric. Jokes were traded. Songs were stretched, sharpened, and reshaped. Mistakes were learned from in real time.

It was here that The Beatles developed their stagecraft, confidence, and chemistry, playing set after set to audiences who knew them, challenged them, and pushed them to be better.

Many fans maintain that The Beatles were never better than during those Cavern lunchtime performances, when hunger, humour, and raw talent collided beneath the brick arches.

The Birthplace of a Musical Identity

More than anywhere else, The Cavern Club was where The Beatles became The Beatles.

The relentless schedule honed their timing. The close quarters sharpened their presence. The roar of the Cavern crowd taught them how to command a room. Long before stadiums and global tours, their education happened underground, on a small stage, with sweat dripping from the ceiling and music bouncing off brick walls.

The Cavern was not a stepping stone. It was a workshop.

A Bond That Never Faded

Even as fame carried them far from Liverpool, The Beatles remained deeply nostalgic about The Cavern Club. It represented freedom, camaraderie, and the moment before everything changed.

For the band, the Cavern was not just where it began. It was where they learned who they were.

A Legacy That Still Echoes

Today, The Cavern Club stands as the most famous music venue in the world, inseparable from The Beatles’ story. Every brick, every arch, every note played since carries the echo of those first performances.

From a lunchtime crowd packed tight on Mathew Street to a global phenomenon, the journey started here.

This is where The Beatles found their voice.
This is where history was made.

On 16 January 1957, in a warehouse cellar at 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool, a music venue opened that would go on to change popular culture forever. That venue was The Cavern Club.

What began as a bold jazz experiment beneath the streets of Liverpool quickly became the beating heart of a global music movement. But on opening night, the dream was clear and precise: to create the finest jazz club outside London.

A Parisian Idea Beneath Liverpool’s Streets

The Cavern Club was the vision of Alan Sytner, a Liverpool-born entrepreneur with a deep love of jazz and an eye firmly fixed on Europe. Inspired by his experiences in Paris, Sytner named the club after the legendary Le Caveau de la Huchette, a famed jazz cellar on the Left Bank.

Like its Parisian namesake, The Cavern was built underground. A brick-vaulted cellar carved out of a warehouse basement, its low ceilings and echoing arches were designed to amplify sound and atmosphere in equal measure. Sytner’s aim was ambitious: to establish Liverpool’s premier jazz venue, and to rival anything being offered in London.

Opening Night: Jazz Takes Over Mathew Street

When The Cavern Club opened its doors on 16 January 1957, the response exceeded all expectations.

The Merseysippi Jazz Band topped the bill, supported by an all-star lineup of local jazz talent including:

  • The Wall City Jazzmen

  • The Ralph Watmough Jazz Band

  • The Coney Island Skiffle Group

Inside the cellar, 600 jazz fans packed shoulder to shoulder, filling every inch of the venue. Above ground, hundreds more queued along Mathew Street, hoping for a chance to descend the narrow steps into Liverpool’s newest cultural hotspot.

It was loud. It was humid. It was electric. From the very first night, The Cavern was alive.

From Jazz Cellar to Cultural Landmark

At its opening, The Cavern Club was unapologetically a traditional jazz venue. Rock ’n’ roll had not yet found its way underground, and skiffle was only just beginning to ripple through the city.

Yet something about the space, the crowd, and the energy proved irresistible. Within a few short years, the cellar that began with jazz would become synonymous with a new sound, a new generation, and a band that would change music forever.

The bricks stayed the same. The spirit only grew louder.

The Beginning of a Global Story

Today, The Cavern Club stands as the most famous music venue in the world, but every legend has an origin story. Ours begins on a cold January night in 1957, with jazz echoing through a cellar and a queue stretching down Mathew Street.

From those first notes played beneath Liverpool, a cultural ripple spread outward, one that continues to draw music lovers from every corner of the globe.

On this day, we remember not just the opening of a venue, but the birth of a place where music history would be written daily.

This is The Cavern Club. This is where it began.

International Beatleweek Festival has been announced as a finalist in the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2025, following what organisers have described as one of the most successful years in the festival’s history. The world’s biggest celebration of The Beatles, organised by The Cavern joins an impressive line-up of regional events and festivals competing for the public vote to be crowned Event/Festival of the Year.

The 2025 festival welcomed over 12,000 fans from across the world to Liverpool city centre, taking part in a week-long celebration of music and culture that included theatre shows, acoustic stages, guest talks, record fairs, outdoor events, and even an excursion to the quintessentially British village of Port Sunlight.

Among the standout moments were unforgettable headline theatre shows — the musical reunion of Liverpool brothers Mark and Paul McGann, performing together for the first time in 43 years, and The Bootleg Beatles’ Liverpool debut of their orchestral show and a ‘mini-festival’ takeover of the stunning village of Port Sunlight, Wirral which wowed festival goers.

For more than 40 years, International Beatleweek has made a significant contribution to Liverpool’s tourism economy. Each year, thousands of visitors travel to the city for the festival, spending in local venues, restaurants, shops, and attractions, and staying an average of almost five nights — generating valuable income and supporting jobs across the region.

Jon Keats, Cavern Director and Festival Organiser says

International Beatleweek is a festival built on love and passion — love for the music, passion for Liverpool’s heritage and culture, and for the friendships formed here every year. To be recognised among the region’s best festivals means so much to us, It’s wonderful recognition for the hard work of our team and venues we collaborate who bring International Beatleweek to life every summer. But this isn’t just our story — it belongs to everyone who travels here, the bands, guests, musicians, artists who are welcomed and become an adopted Scouser for a week. This nomination is really for them.”

The Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards celebrate the people, places, and experiences that power a visitor economy worth £6.25 billion, recognising the exceptional quality, creativity, and warmth that make Liverpool one of the UK’s most compelling destinations.

This year’s awards feature 20 categories spanning accommodation, attractions, food and drink, entertainment, events, and innovation — reflecting the diversity and ambition of the region’s visitor economy across all six boroughs.

Winners will be revealed at a glittering ceremony at Liverpool Cathedral on Thursday 5 March 2026, hosted by Radio Merseyside’s Kevin Duala. Category winners will also have the chance to be considered for the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, providing a route to national recognition.

The awards process involves independent judging through expert panels, interviews, and, where relevant, mystery shopping — ensuring integrity and fairness at every stage.

Katie Bentley, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications, Liverpool BID Company, headline sponsor, added:

“Congratulations to those shortlisted, a fantastic recognition of the incredible work taking place across Liverpool City Region’s tourism and visitor economy. These businesses, individuals and events are vital to our city’s success, contributing over £6 billion each year and creating unforgettable experiences that make Liverpool City Region such a special destination.”

The world’s most celebrated Beatles festival organised by The Cavern returns this summer with its biggest and most heartfelt programme yet. International Beatleweek 2025 promises a spectacular lineup of live performances, emotional tributes, and once-in-a-lifetime reunions, all set against the iconic backdrop of the city where it all began.

McGann Brothers Reunite Musically for First Time in over 40 Years

Liverpool’s Mark and Paul McGann will reunite on stage for the first time in 43 years in In His Life — a moving new show from Mark McGann, premiering at the Everyman Theatre on Friday 22nd August.

Mark, whose acting career has long drawn inspiration from John Lennon, returns to the stage with brother Paul as his special guest in a powerful homage to The Beatle who changed his life. Fittingly, the show takes place at the Everyman — the theatre that helped launch their careers as members of the Everyman Youth Theatre — making this a poignant homecoming and cultural moment of the festival.

MARK McGANN says

I’m honoured to be asked by the organisers of International Beatleweek, Cavern City Tours, to perform in August at the Everyman Theatre, providing me with a wonderful opportunity to honour the theatre where it all started for me, the man (John Lennon) whose story provided significant early impetus to my career, and the special city that made me. Yet perhaps the greatest thrill of all for me will be the participation of my brother Paul, who will be joining me onstage for the first time since 1982.

The Bootleg Beatles Debut Brand New Show at the Philharmonic

Fresh from Glastonbury and backed by a full orchestra, The Bootleg Beatles bring their brand-new show to a Liverpool audience for the first time, performing on the newly refurbished stage at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. As the UK’s premier Beatles tribute band, their performance promises spine-tingling authenticity and musical brilliance as they take on the music from the movies…The Beatles movies that is.

Tickets are limited and available now at www.internationalbeatleweek.com.

Tributes to Two Lost Legends: Clem Burke & Joey Molland

This year’s festival will also include heartfelt tributes to two dearly missed members of the International Beatleweek family. Clem Burke, long-term member of Blondie and drummer for Californian rockers and festival favourites The Tearaways, will be honoured in a moving performance by his bandmates, following his recent passing. The Tearaways will also pay an emotional tribute to their dear friend Joey Molland of Badfinger, The Tearaways will also honour Joey Molland of Badfinger, with whom they shared the stage many times over the years. The Liverpool-born artist was signed to Apple Records with Badfinger, and worked with both with John Lennon and George Harrison. Joey, a beloved friend of The Cavern and festival regular, will be remembered with love, music and stories.

Legends Who Were There: From The Quarrymen to Wings

Beatleweek Festival’s enduring appeal lies in its authenticity — and this year, that legacy continues with special appearances by original Beatles contemporaries and collaborators including:

Billy J. Kramer – Managed by Brian Epstein and known for a string of hit records featuring songs written by Lennon & McCartney.

Geoff Britton – Former drummer of Wings, who played alongside Paul McCartney in the mid-1970s.

The Original Quarrymen – John Lennon’s very first band, performing live at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Saturday 23rd August as part of a special Beatles Variety Show.

This is a rare opportunity to hear from the people who were there at the birth of Beatlemania and involved in the Beatles careers beyond The Fab Four, as they share their own stories from inside music history.

Jon Keats, Cavern Director and festival organiser says;

Each year we aim to bring something truly special to International Beatleweek  and 2025 promises to be one of the most emotional and exciting festivals we’ve ever staged. At the heart of this festival though, as it is every year, is the musical legacy of John, Paul, George and Ringo. And what a legacy, music that unites fans from all over the world in the city where they was born.

Liverpool: The Mecca for Beatles Fans Around the Globe

International Beatleweek isn’t just a music festival — it’s an unrivalled cultural pilgrimage. Now more than ever, it offers a multi-generational connection to a moment in time that changed the world. With performances, talks, tours, and tributes across The Cavern Club, Philharmonic Hall, Everyman Theatre and venues city and region wide, the festival invites fans to walk in the footsteps of legends and discover the rich musical soul of Liverpool.

Jon Keats adds;

68 years since John met Paul, this city remains the beating heart of the story of The Beatles; a living, breathing, global musical heritage experience. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering the magic for the first time, International Beatleweek 2025 promises a vibrant, emotional, and electrifying celebration that no other city — and no other festival — can offer.

A legendary chapter in British music is about to come to a close — and what better place for it than the world’s most iconic festival? This weekend, The Searchers, one of Liverpool’s original Merseybeat pioneers, will take to the stage at Glastonbury, performing what they’ve announced will be their final live show.

It’s an emotional moment for fans across the globe, but especially for us here at The Cavern Club, where The Searchers’ incredible journey first began.

Black and white photo of people dancing outside The Cavern Club in Liverpool with a crowd watching under the sign reading "Where it all began."

Where it all began — music lovers dancing outside The Cavern Club on Mathew Street during the height of Liverpool’s music revolution.

From Mathew Street to Glastonbury

The Searchers emerged from Liverpool’s thriving early 1960s music scene, becoming a cornerstone of the Merseybeat sound that took the world by storm. Alongside fellow Cavern Club regulars like The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Searchers crafted a sound built on jangling guitars, soaring harmonies, and irresistible melodies.

Hits like Sweets for My Sweet, Needles and Pins, When You Walk in the Room, and Don’t Throw Your Love Away cemented their place in pop history — and their music still lights up dance floors and radio airwaves to this day.

A Historic Farewell

Their final performance at Glastonbury 2025 promises to be a celebration of their remarkable career and enduring influence. For many festival-goers, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the band that helped define the sound of a generation. And for those who remember The Searchers from their early days at The Cavern, it’s sure to be a bittersweet farewell to a group that has flown the flag for Liverpool for over six decades.

We know they’ll take the same energy, warmth, and timeless tunes to the Glastonbury stage as they have to every gig over the years — from the cellar of The Cavern Club to the bright lights of international fame.

While this may be their final show, their legacy will echo on — in their records, in the countless musicians they’ve influenced, and of course, here at The Cavern Club, where it all began.

We’ll be cheering them on at Glastonbury — and we know the whole of Liverpool will be too.

Thank you, The Searchers. The music lives on.

Decades on, still going strong — The Searchers performing live in 2006, continuing their legacy of timeless music.

Last week, legendary drummer Max Weinberg brought his Jukebox band to the Cavern Club for not one, but three unforgettable, high-energy gigs — all while in town performing with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at Anfield.

Hot off the back of a three-hour stadium performance with ‘The Boss’ just the night before, Max showed no signs of slowing down. The (insert age here)-year-old powerhouse delivered three epic sets over two nights at the Cavern, proving his stamina is as legendary as his rhythm.

The gigs came during a week when the whole city of Liverpool was buzzing with excitement. Springsteen performed in Liverpool for the very first time in his illustrious career, and the atmosphere was electric across the city. Fans were thrilled to spot Bruce visiting iconic Liverpool landmarks, including a trip to Paul McCartney’s famous LIPA academy — with none other than Sir Paul himself as his personal tour guide! The magic continued when Sir Paul made a surprise appearance on stage at Anfield on Saturday night, joining Bruce for a truly historic moment.

Back at the Cavern, Max and his band powered through fan-requested rock and roll classics in an intimate, high-octane setting that had the packed crowd on their feet throughout. In between sets, Max took the time to meet fans, pose for photos, and share stories from his incredible career. During his visit, Max was also inducted into the Cavern’s legendary Wall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his contribution to rock music.

Max now joins a growing list of E Street Band members who have played the world-famous Cavern stage. Little Steven Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul previously blew the roof off with their unforgettable full-band performance, squeezing a full soulful set complete with a brass section onto the Cavern’s famously cosy stage.

It was an honour to welcome Max Weinberg and his Jukebox to the Cavern — now all that’s left is to welcome ‘The Boss’ himself!
